In this episode, we look at the meanings and usage of words such as ‘обозна́ться’, ‘взахлёб’, and ‘Плю́шкин’. You can hear a detailed explanation in the video — don’t forget to turn on the subtitles. Below, I’ve included some extra notes related to the video.

Find out more about this format here.

Note 1

The verb ‘обозна́ться’ (to mistake someone for someone else) is reflexive, so it always includes the ending -сь/-ся.

Note 2

The adverb ‘взахлёб’ comes from the verb ‘захлёбываться’ (to choke or be short of breath). Over time, it developed a figurative meaning associated with doing something with great intensity and without restraint.

Whenever in doubt, it’s worth checking a dictionary.
