Russian is full of compound words — little puzzles made of two or more meaningful parts. Once you understand how they’re built, remembering them becomes much easier.
Here are a few examples:
(This task is a real brain teaser.)
📌 очеви́дец (eyewitness) = о́чи (eyes) + ви́деть (to see)
(The eyewitnesses described what happened.)
💡 Note: ‘О́чи’ is an old or poetic word for ‘глаза́’ (eyes).
(Mum set a few mousetraps at the dacha.)
(National Book Lovers Day is celebrated on August 9th.)
📌 звездопа́д (meteor shower) = звезда́ (star) + па́дать (to fall)
(We watched a beautiful meteor shower last night.)
Compound words often reveal meaning through their parts — once you learn the roots, the logic behind them becomes surprisingly clear.
